Adult Braces in Frisco TX
Costs, insurance, timelines, and what adults in Frisco actually need to know before starting

More adults are starting orthodontic treatment in Frisco than ever before. At Elate Orthodontics, roughly one in three new patients is an adult. Some are correcting bite problems they have had since childhood. Some want to improve their smile before a career change or milestone birthday. Some tried aligners somewhere else and need a proper finish. Whatever brought you here, the clinical questions adults have are different from the ones teenagers ask, and this page is written for those questions specifically.

How Adult Orthodontics Differs Clinically
Adult jaws have finished growing. That fact changes orthodontic treatment in three meaningful ways that most patients do not hear explained before they start.
Teeth move more slowly in adult bone
Bone density increases with age, which makes tooth movement more deliberate. This is not a problem, it is predictable. Dr. Baharvand adjusts force levels and tray progression accordingly. Adult treatment is rarely dramatically longer than teen treatment for the same case, but it is not faster either, and any estimate promising very short timelines for complex adult cases deserves scrutiny.
Skeletal problems cannot be corrected with braces alone
In children and teenagers, orthodontists can use growth to correct jaw discrepancies. In adults, if your upper and lower jaws are significantly misaligned, braces can camouflage the problem by moving teeth to compensate, but they cannot move the jaw itself. Severe cases may require orthognathic surgery coordinated with an oral surgeon. Dr. Baharvand will tell you clearly at the consultation whether your case falls into that category.
Gum health is a prerequisite, not an afterthought
Moving teeth through unhealthy bone causes problems, not improvements. If you have active periodontal disease, it must be treated and stabilized before orthodontic treatment begins. We will flag this at the consultation if it applies. Most adults are cleared without issue, but it is a clinical step that simply does not exist for most teenage patients.
Braces Options for Adults at Elate Frisco
Every adult patient at Elate has the same four treatment paths available. Which one Dr. Baharvand or Dr. Kang recommends depends on your clinical needs first and your lifestyle preferences second.
Most efficient for complex bite correction. The only option that can handle any case type including severe crowding, large overbites, and surgical coordination. Lower cost than clear options at most practices.
Best for: complex cases, budget-priority patients, those who prefer set-it-and-forget-it treatment
Tooth-colored brackets that are much less visible than metal, with the same clinical power. Popular with working professionals who want a discreet fixed option without the compliance requirements of aligners.
Best for: adults who want discreet braces but do not want to manage removable trays
Clear removable trays worn 20 to 22 hours per day. Highly popular with adult patients. Requires consistent wear and more self-discipline than fixed braces. Results depend heavily on compliance.
Best for: mild to moderate cases, motivated adults, those who travel frequently
A clear aligner system Dr. Baharvand teaches nationally. Handles a broader range of adult cases than Invisalign in many situations. Priced the same as braces at Elate, with no upcharge for choosing aligners over metal.
Best for: moderate to complex aligner cases where Invisalign may fall short
Considering a limited cosmetic correction only?
Some adult patients want to address only the front six teeth (sometimes called a “Social Six” correction) rather than a full comprehensive case. This can reduce treatment time to 6 to 9 months in appropriate situations. It is not suitable for everyone, and Dr. Baharvand will be direct with you about whether your bite allows for it. A limited correction that worsens your bite is not a good outcome, and we will not recommend it if that is the risk.
How Long Do Adult Braces Take in Frisco?
Treatment length for adults varies by what you are correcting, not by age. These are realistic ranges for Frisco adult patients at Elate.
| What you are correcting | Typical timeline | Notes for adults |
|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic crowding or spacing (front teeth only) | 6 to 9 months | Only appropriate if bite is already stable. Limited treatment, not suitable for all cases. |
| Moderate crowding or spacing, full arch | 12 to 18 months | Most common adult case type. Aligners and braces both work well here. |
| Overbite, underbite, or crossbite correction | 18 to 30 months | Bite correction in adults takes longer because growth cannot assist. Braces often outperform aligners for these cases. |
| Relapse after prior treatment | 6 to 18 months | Depends on severity. Many adults who had braces as teens see partial relapse over decades. Usually faster to re-treat than the original case. |
| Surgical orthodontics (jaw surgery coordination) | 24 to 36 months total | Pre-surgical orthodontics, surgery with oral surgeon, then post-surgical orthodontic finish. Not common but sometimes the only correct solution for large skeletal discrepancies. |
Any practice that gives you a firm treatment timeline without examining your bite first is guessing. At Elate, timeline estimates are given at the free consultation after a clinical exam, not over the phone or in a web form.
How Much Do Adult Braces Cost in Frisco TX?
Treatment cost at Elate is based on case complexity, not on which treatment type you choose. Invisalign and Angel Aligners are priced at the same level as traditional metal braces, which is unusual in the Frisco market. Most practices charge a premium for clear aligners. Elate does not.
| Treatment type | Typical Frisco range | At Elate |
|---|---|---|
| Metal braces | $3,500 to $6,000 | Discussed at free consultation |
| Clear ceramic braces | $4,000 to $6,500 | Same as metal braces at Elate |
| Invisalign | $4,000 to $6,500 | Same as metal braces at Elate |
| Angel Aligners | $4,000 to $6,500 | Same as metal braces at Elate |
Use the Elate finance calculator to estimate monthly payments. Most Frisco adult patients pay between $150 and $300 per month depending on down payment and plan length. No credit check financing is available.
Does Insurance Cover Adult Braces in Texas?
Insurance coverage for adult orthodontics exists but it is inconsistent across plans. Here is the practical breakdown:
Employer dental plans (Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, BCBS, UHC)
Many employer-provided dental plans include an orthodontic lifetime maximum, typically $1,000 to $2,500, that applies to all ages. Coverage percentage is often 50% up to that maximum. Whether adult orthodontics is covered at all depends entirely on your specific plan document. Call the number on your insurance card and ask specifically whether your plan covers orthodontic treatment for adults, and what the lifetime orthodontic maximum is. Elate will verify your benefits before your consultation and tell you exactly what to expect.
Texas Medicaid for adults
Texas Medicaid covers dental services for adults in very limited circumstances. Orthodontic treatment for cosmetic or functional improvement is generally not covered. Approval requires documentation of severe medical necessity, such as trauma, congenital defect, or a documented functional impairment. For the large majority of adults in Frisco seeking braces, Medicaid will not apply. If you believe you may qualify for a medical necessity exception, bring your medical documentation to the consultation and we will advise you honestly.
HSA and FSA funds
Orthodontic treatment is an eligible expense under most Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). If you have money in either account, using it for orthodontic treatment is one of the highest-value ways to spend pre-tax dollars. Confirm with your plan administrator before relying on FSA funds for the full cost, since FSA balances typically must be used within the plan year.
What Adults in Frisco Actually Ask Us
Will braces affect my appearance at work?
Clear ceramic braces are significantly less noticeable than metal brackets at conversational distance. Invisalign and Angel Aligners are nearly invisible in most professional settings. If your work involves close-range video calls or client-facing presentations and you are concerned about appearance, clear aligners are the most practical choice. That said, many of our adult patients in professional roles choose metal braces because they prioritize treatment efficiency and the braces are less of a workplace issue than they anticipated.
How many appointments will I need?
Braces require check-in appointments roughly every 6 to 8 weeks. Aligner patients typically come in every 8 to 10 weeks since you are managing tray changes at home. Elate operates two Frisco offices (West Frisco at FM 423 and North Frisco at University Drive and 380) so you can rotate between locations based on which one is easier for a given week. Most adult patients in Frisco find the appointment cadence very manageable once treatment is underway.
I had braces as a teenager and my teeth have shifted. Do I need full treatment again?
Not necessarily. Most adults who experience post-adolescent relapse have a moderate amount of shifting, not a return to the original problem. Re-treatment cases are usually faster than the original treatment because the bones remember the previous positions. The cause of the relapse, almost always a retainer that was stopped too soon, also needs to be addressed so that this does not happen again. Elate offers the Retainer Assurance Program specifically for long-term retention management.
What about retainers after adult braces?
Retention after adult treatment is permanent, not a phase you finish. Teeth move throughout life, and the older you are when you finish treatment, the more life is left for them to shift. Adults who stop wearing retainers will experience some relapse over years. At Elate, we include a post-treatment retainer and transition you to nighttime-only wear as soon as your bite is stable. See the full retainer care guide for wear schedules and cleaning instructions.
