At Elate Orthodontics, retainers are not an afterthought, they are the final and permanent phase of orthodontic treatment. Dr. Baharvand and Dr. Kang provide custom-fitted retainers, replacement retainers, and a dedicated Retainer Assurance Program to protect your investment in your smile for life. Serving Frisco, The Colony, and Prosper.

Why Retainers Are Not Optional

Braces and aligners move teeth by applying sustained pressure through the periodontal ligament (PDL), the elastic fibers that attach each tooth root to the surrounding bone. When treatment ends, those fibers have a strong biological memory and will begin pulling teeth back toward their original positions. This is not a defect in treatment, it is basic physiology. Without a retainer holding teeth in place while the bone remodels and stabilizes, relapse is virtually inevitable.

Retention is not a temporary phase. Teeth continue to change slowly throughout life regardless of whether you ever had orthodontic treatment. Wearing a retainer as directed, full-time initially and then nightly long-term, is how you protect the result permanently.

Prevents relapse

Without a retainer, teeth begin shifting within days to weeks. The longer you go without wearing one, the greater the movement and the harder it becomes to fit the retainer back in.

Protects your investment

Years of treatment and thousands of dollars are protected by a retainer that costs a fraction of retreatment. The retainer is the cheapest part of orthodontic care and the most important to maintain.

Accounts for lifelong tooth movement

Even people who never had braces experience tooth shifting with age. Nightly retainer wear manages this natural drift and keeps the alignment from deteriorating over decades.

Types of Retainers We Offer

Clear / Essix Retainer

Transparent plastic trays custom-made from a digital scan of your teeth. Nearly invisible when worn, no wires, and comfortable for nightly use. The most common retainer after aligner treatment. Typically last 1 to 3 years with proper care. Cost: $200 to $600.

Fixed / Bonded Retainer

A thin wire bonded to the back surfaces of the front teeth. Works continuously without any patient compliance required. Ideal for patients with a history of relapse or who are likely to forget removable retainers. Requires a floss threader or water flosser to clean around the wire. Cost: $250 to $500. Lifespan: 5 to 10 or more years with proper care.

Hawley Retainer

A wire and acrylic retainer that has been used reliably for decades. More durable than clear plastic retainers and adjustable over time. Available in custom colors and patterns, which makes them popular with younger patients. Cost: $300 to $700.

How to Care for Your Retainer

Brush and rinse daily

Use a soft toothbrush and cool water. Avoid toothpaste, which scratches the surface and creates grooves where bacteria accumulate.

Soak regularly

Retainer cleaning tablets or a diluted white vinegar soak once or twice a week removes calcium deposits and bacteria that brushing alone does not eliminate.

No hot liquids or heat

Heat warps plastic retainers permanently. Never leave a retainer in a hot car, clean it with hot water, or run it through a dishwasher.

Always use the case

Retainers wrapped in napkins at restaurants are the most common reason for lost retainers. The case goes everywhere the retainer goes.

Retainer Questions, Answered

Do you have to wear a retainer forever?

Yes, but the time commitment decreases significantly after the first few months. Most patients wear retainers full-time for 3 to 6 months after treatment, then transition to nighttime-only wear indefinitely. Nightly wear for life is the standard recommendation from orthodontic specialists worldwide because teeth continue to shift slowly throughout adulthood regardless of prior treatment.

How long can I go without wearing my retainer?

Even a few days without a retainer can result in measurable shifting, especially in the first year after treatment when bone is still stabilizing. The longer you go without wearing it, the tighter it becomes when you try to put it back in. If your retainer no longer fits, contact us rather than forcing it, which can cause damage to teeth and the appliance.

How much does a replacement retainer cost?

Clear Essix retainers run $200 to $600, Hawley retainers $300 to $700, and fixed bonded retainers $250 to $500. Many insurance plans cover replacements every few years. Elate Orthodontics’ Retainer Assurance Program offers active patients discounted replacements. We store your digital scans so replacements can be made quickly without new impressions.

Does insurance cover retainers?

Many PPO dental insurance plans that include an orthodontic benefit cover at least the initial set of retainers, and some cover replacements every two to three years. We verify your benefits before ordering so you know your out-of-pocket cost upfront.

What if I lost my retainer and cannot afford a new one right now?

Contact us immediately rather than waiting. The sooner you get a replacement, the less your teeth will have shifted and the better the new retainer will fit. We offer payment plans and the Retainer Assurance Program to make sure cost is not a reason to go without. Every day without a retainer is a day your teeth are shifting.

How long do retainers last?

Clear Essix retainers typically last 1 to 3 years with good daily care. Hawley retainers last several years and can be adjusted. Fixed bonded retainers can last 5 to 10 or more years if cleaned properly and checked at regular dental visits. No retainer lasts forever, which is why having a plan for replacements matters.

Can I get a replacement retainer years later?

Yes, but the longer you wait, the more your teeth may have shifted from their post-treatment position. If the shift is minor, a new retainer will fit comfortably and hold what remains. If there has been significant relapse, a short course of aligner treatment to re-align before making a new retainer may be recommended.

What is a fixed retainer and how do I clean it?

A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of your front teeth, usually the lower front six. It requires no daily removal but does require careful cleaning. A floss threader or water flosser is needed to clean under and around the wire. Plaque and tartar accumulate around bonded wires without consistent attention, so professional cleanings every six months are important. See the Retainer Care guide for step-by-step cleaning instructions.

Is my retainer causing harm to my teeth?

A clean, well-fitting retainer does not harm teeth. Problems arise when retainers are not cleaned daily, allowing bacteria and plaque to accumulate against enamel, or when a retainer that no longer fits is forced back in. If your retainer feels significantly tighter than usual, schedule an appointment rather than forcing it.

Is there any substitute for a retainer?

No. Night guards are not designed for retention and will not prevent shifting. Old aligner trays are not a substitute either, as they represent the tooth position from weeks or months before the end of treatment, not the final position. The only effective substitute for one type of retainer is another type of retainer, such as switching from a removable to a fixed retainer if compliance is an ongoing challenge.

Need a Retainer or Replacement? We Are Ready.

Whether you are finishing treatment, replacing a lost retainer, or getting your first retainer from another practice, we can help. Digital scans, fast turnaround, and the Retainer Assurance Program are available at all three locations.
