One of the most common questions I hear is some version of “which is cheaper, braces or Invisalign?” It is a fair question, but the honest answer surprises people: for most patients, the two cost about the same, and the real driver of your price is your case, not the method. Let me break down exactly how the numbers compare, what should be in each quote, and how to make either option affordable.
First, a quick word on names. Most people say “Invisalign,” but that is just the best-known brand of clear aligner. The category is clear aligners, and there are several systems. In our offices we use Angel Aligners as our system of choice because we get excellent results with them and they are often a better value for families, though we will always discuss Invisalign if you specifically want it.

Cost side by side
Here are the typical Texas ranges for each option. Notice how much they overlap, which is exactly the point.
| Option | Typical Texas range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Metal braces | $3,000 to $6,500 | Often the lowest upfront |
| Ceramic braces | $4,000 to $7,000 | Less visible than metal |
| Clear aligners | $3,500 to $7,500 | Removable and nearly invisible |
What each price includes
A quote is only useful if you know what it covers. At Elate, both braces and aligner quotes include your exam and records, every adjustment or aligner check for the full course of treatment, and retainers at the end. When you compare an outside quote, ask whether those pieces are bundled or billed separately, because that is often where a “cheaper” option quietly becomes more expensive.
What actually drives the price
- Case complexity. A minor alignment fix costs less than a full bite correction, in either braces or aligners.
- Treatment length. More months means more visits, more materials, and a higher total.
- Number of aligners or appliances. Complex aligner cases need more trays; some braces cases need elastics or an expander.
- Provider training. A board-certified orthodontist plans the case to finish efficiently, which protects you from paying for extra months.
Insurance and financing
Good news: insurance almost never cares which one you pick. If your plan includes orthodontic coverage, it typically applies the same lifetime benefit, usually $1,000 to $3,500 per person, to braces and clear aligners alike. We are in-network with most major PPO plans and will verify your benefits at your visit. For the balance, our finance calculator estimates a monthly payment, and interest-free in-house plans, CareCredit, and Cherry are all available.
Hidden costs to ask about
Two line items catch people off guard. First, replacement trays: if you lose an aligner, some providers charge per replacement, so ask how that is handled. Second, retainers: keeping your result requires them, and a good quote includes the first set. Be especially wary of mail-order aligner companies advertising rock-bottom prices, because skipping in-person exams and x-rays can allow problems that cost far more to fix later.
Which is right for you?
Since cost is usually a wash, the decision comes down to fit. Braces are fixed, so they work around the clock without depending on you, and they handle the most complex movements. Clear aligners are removable and nearly invisible, which suits adults and disciplined teens who will wear them 20 to 22 hours a day. At your consultation we will tell you honestly which is the better tool for your case, and quote both so the choice is yours.
